Smokin Joe is 48 years young, and spent his early days as a motor mechanic working on vintage cars in the early 1980's. Dirt circuit cars in the late 80's, and he raced jet sprint boats in the mid 90's. He had the usual mini bikes and dirt bikes from 13 years of age. His first road bike was a 1979 Z250, then a 1979 RD 400, 1977 Z650B and 1978 Z1000 A2. At present he is the owner of 3 x Z650's, a Z1000 A2, Honda dax, KH100 and a CB 125 soon to be bucket.


"My first bike race meeting was with Glenn (TUG) who raced with Hartwell M.C.C. as Z Owners Racing with Colin Files (Speed) as Pit Crew / Race Manager. I met some great people and had a great week-end. This was the start of bike racing for me when Rolly offered me a bucket to race in the next round......I couldn't say no. I started with Z Owners Racing in April 2009 with Hartwell M.C.C. on Rolland Skate's bucket, a CB 125 with a less than powerful 150cc Taiwanese push rod engine. It was a great intro into bike racing, much fun to be had. I bought my own bike, the KH100 kawasaki in late '09. What a trip man. Having a great time, met more great people. Thanks to Glenn (TUG), Colin (Speed), Karen and Rolland Skate. Without these people none of this would have happened".

Joe races a 1981 Kawasaki KH100 superlight 'bucket' in the Hartwell MCC series. It is a 100cc rotary disc valve 2 stoke, with a 2nd oversized wisco piston. The engine case has been modified to fit 36mm flat side mikuni carby, ported. The expansion chamber exhaust is home made, along with the rear sear set foot pegs, gear change lever and rear break lever. It has a YZ 125 ignition system (C.D.I.). Standard mag wheels. Joe finished 9th overall in '09 on the CB150, 5th overall in 2010 on the KH100, and 2nd overall on the KH100 in 2011 - well done Joe! Joe has also recently purchased a Period 5 Z650 / 750 which he has just started competing on at Hartwell rounds.
